Vairtross Cult Snake Masks

It is rare that someone gets close enough to the cult that occupies Vairtross and lives to tell the tale. That said, survivors of such an incident have all similarly reported the horrific sight of the masks that each member wears on a regular basis.

Each member wears a black hood with a face mask sewn onto the front. The mask is a grotesque version of a snake, its mouth wide

open, ready to attack. It is said that this cult are devout worshippers of the dark god, Baladan, and the imagery of the snake mask almost certainly confirms this.

The snake on the mask is a combination of horror and function. The mouth of the snake is open wide, as if ready to strike its prey. Its tongue lashes out, fangs bared, ready to attack any that cross its path. Of course, the mask still needs to function as a mast, and so within the snake’s mouth is a small mouth hole for the wearer to breathe. The eyes of the snake are dark and hollow, allowing the wearer to see.

Spouting from the head of the snake, the mask is completed by the body of the snake wrapping its way around the head, providing extra protection for the neck.

Some say the masks are made of silver or gold. It’s possible that they are made from both, and vary depending on the rank of the cult member.

The sketch here doesn’t do justice to the horrific sight that would befall you should you be so unfortunate as to come across a man wearing such a headpiece. If you do catch a glimpse of this mask, stay hidden, stay safe, and escape while you still have your life. If you decide to confront such people, you may become the victim of dark magic.
