What Is Dungeon Lords? A Look at Its Legacy and Evolution

Dungeon Lords began as a cult-classic PC game, but its legacy didn’t end there. Over the years, the name has been used for a board game, a fantasy novel (Dungeon Lord by Hugo Huesca), and now lives on under the trademarked vision of J.B. Coleman. Reclaiming the name in 2023, Coleman has transformed Dungeon Lords into a new epic fantasy saga, Fate of Evania, a multi-book gamelit-inspired series that carries forward the spirit of strategy, darkness, and worldbuilding the original game inspired. This page is your guide to exploring the many past uses of the Dungeon Lords name and how they helped pave the way for its evolution into a modern franchise.

Dungeon Lord Legacies – Cobra Kai (2019-2025)

A Popular Game that Never Existed

Dungeon Lord: Legacies first appeared in Cobra Kai Season 2 as a fictional comic book mentioned by the character Demetri, later resurfacing in Season 4 as a video game played by Kenny and Anthony in 2021. Though entirely made up for the show, its retro fantasy vibes and dramatic name struck a chord with fans—many of whom searched online to see if the game was real. While Dungeon Lord: Legacies doesn’t exist, its inclusion in Cobra Kai added a surprising layer to the evolving pop culture footprint of the Dungeon Lords name.

Dungeon Lords by Hugo Huesca (2017-2024)

A LitRPG Series

One of the most popular reimaginings of the Dungeon Lords name came through the gamelit series by Hugo Huesca, beginning with Dungeon Lord: The Wraith’s Haunt. First released in 2017, the series follows Earth-born hero Edward Wright as he’s summoned into a game-like world and offered the role of a Dungeon Lord—traditionally a villain, but one he twists toward rebellion. With a blend of LitRPG mechanics, dark worldbuilding, and dungeon core elements, Huesca’s Dungeon Lord series carved out its own legacy in the genre and built a dedicated fanbase.

Another notable use of the Dungeon Lords name came in 2009 with the release of the Dungeon Lords board game by acclaimed designer Vlaada Chvátil. Published by Czech Games Edition, the game lets players become evil dungeon managers competing to build lairs, attract minions, and fend off meddling heroes. With its deep strategy, humorous tone, and Euro-style mechanics, the board game earned a strong following and several award nominations. Though unrelated to the PC game or later fantasy novels, it stands as a beloved part of the Dungeon Lords legacy and a favorite among tabletop fans.
